| Material Grade | Premium European Ash (Fraxinus excelsior). Selected for its high density, excellent bending resilience, and superior shock resistance. The timber is meticulously sorted for consistent grain pattern and minimal color variation. |
| Process | Precision Steam Bending (Thonet Method). The solid ash blank is subjected to controlled high-pressure steam to plasticize the lignin, then bent to precision radius in a heavy-duty steel mold. The component is held under tension while drying to permanently lock the shape, eliminating springback. |
| Structural Integrity | Full monolithic construction preserves the wood's natural fiber path. The robust 9.1 × 4.5 cm cross-section provides exceptional load-bearing capacity, making it suitable for primary structural furniture components. |
| Finish Ready | Precision-trimmed ends and multi-stage sanding to a smooth, consistent surface. The piece is ready for staining, oiling, or clear coating to match your specific design palette. |
| Dimensional Stability | Manufactured to strict tolerances in accordance with EN 13879 and ASTM D143 standards. The bent profile maintains its shape long-term even under fluctuating humidity conditions. |
Kiln-Dried Stock Preparation
Only fully seasoned ash (8-10% moisture content) is used to prevent checking and splitting during bending. Blanks are precision cut to length and inspected for grain orientation and natural defects.
Steam Conditioning
The timber is exposed to superheated steam in a controlled chamber. This critical step softens the wood's cellular structure, allowing it to conform to tight radii without fiber rupture.
Mold Forming & Setting
The conditioned stock is rapidly transferred to custom-machined forming jigs. The component is secured under pressure, combining mechanical clamping with metal banding (Thonet strap) on the convex side to prevent blowout. It remains in the mold during the final drying phase to ensure permanent set.
Post-Form Finishing
After demolding, the arch undergoes precision trimming to achieve the 133.5cm length. The entire surface is sanded sequentially to a fine finish, removing all tool marks and preparing it for final finishes.
